Produced between the 1993 and 2002 model years, the fourth generation of the Camaro is somewhat polarizing in terms of looks. Under the skin, however, the Golden Bowtie didn’t forget what a pony car is all about.
LT4 is the name of the most powerful engine offered at the time, a small-block V8 rocking 330 horsepower and 340 pound-feet (460 Nm) of torque. The Camaro we’ll talk about today is far more potent than that, even though it features two fewer cylinders in the guise of a 2JZ from the Supra MkV.
Tuned to nearly 1,200 rear-wheel horsepower, the 2JZ Camaro owned by Cooper Bogetti features an 85-millimeter turbocharger and a triple exhaust system exiting through the passenger-side front fender. A Powerglide transmission is responsible for channeling the suck-squeeze-bang-blow to the rear axle, which is fitted with very sticky drag radials.
Previously capable of 8.2 seconds on the quarter-mile run, Cooper’s one-of-a-kind build has managed to dip into the 7s at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals at Bradenton Motorsports Park. 7.8 seconds at 176.56 miles per hour (284.1 kph), to be more precise, but that wasn’t enough to fend off Jim Braun.
The owner of the white-painted Mustang ran 7.52 seconds at 184.25 miles per hour (296.5 kph), but, to be frank, that pony car is far more serious under the hood. Eight cylinders, two turbochargers, Motec engine management, and an ethanol fuel kit translate to more than 1,400 horsepower at the wheels.
Coming courtesy of Drag Racing and Car Stuff, the following video also shows Gerod Vernon in his Supra MkIV clocking 7.87 seconds at 177.45 mph (285.6 kph) on the first run and 7.72 seconds at 180.94 mph (291.2 kph) on the second run. Better known as 9TMARES, this car reportedly lays down 1,000 horsepower.
There’s no denying Cooper’s 2JZ Camaro is the most unusual strip slayer of the three blacktop warriors featured in this video, but the question is, which one of them would you like to race a quarter-mile at a time?
