265 MPH Crash In-Car Video

Crashes, terrifying and deadly as they are, are spectacular in nature. When a driver of a wrecked car manages to get out of the vehicle, pretty much unscathed, the spectacle of a crash is even more amazing.

Until now however, none of us really had the opportunity to see how a high-speed crash looks from the inside of the car. The violence of the impact, debris flying all over and the uncontrollable motions of the human body falling pray to the laws of physics have been until now somewhat limited.

None of us, we're sure, had the chance to see how a crash at 265 mph (426 km/h) looks like from inside of the car. Until now. The past weekend, the famous Bonneville Salt Flats was host to the 2010 Bonneville World Finals, a competition in which the mightiest cars and their daredevil drivers strive to break world speed records.

So was the case with Danny Thompson, driver for the Hajek Racing team. Climbing aboard of a Mustang powered by E-85 fuel, the driver attempted to break the speed record for cars in its class.

At first, everything seemed to be going as planned, with the car performing great. At one point though, when the needle showed 265 mph, the car's nose began to lift. The Mustang became airborne, flipping in the air, hitting the ground and tumbling for the next quarter of a mile.

During the entire terrifying experience, Thompson remained firmly strapped in his seat. As glass flies all around him, the driver is well protected by the roll cage, the seat and the belt.

Thompson managed to walk away uninjured from the crash. Some say even the iPhone he was carrying in the front of his suit was left without a scratch.
