Three weeks before the sad event, this 1972 Ferrari Daytona was restored to its original glory. In fact, the rare Prancing Horse recently stole the show at the Motorclassica exhibition in Melbourne. Fate has brought the precious sportscar in the hands of a band of crooks, though, who not only took it away from its owner but also decided to set it on fire.
Along with the glorious 1972 Daytona, a 1986 Ferrari 328 worth more than $100,000 was also stolen from a Braeside, Victoria repair shop early on Friday morning. Stealing the rare vehicles is one thing, but for some unknown reason, they decided to torch one of them too. Police forces have found the $2.5 million worth Daytona burned in Melbourne’s southeast area the other day.

According to The Australian, the rare sportscar was extensively damaged in the blaze, with the second Ferrari still missing. Classic Ferraris are growing in value at a steady pace, but this particular breed is more than just a glowing sportscar from the past.

It may as well pass as a token among collectors, considering that it’s reportedly been owned by prominent celebrities. According to the source, British Formula One legend James Hunt drove it while it was owned by the wife of the owner of his first F1 team.

Then, Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters owned it too, before business magnate Mohamed Al-Fayed bought it in the 1980s. That’s how the sportscar became somewhat royal, as the investor gifted the car to his son Dodi before he and Princess Diana were killed in the famous car accident in Paris, in 1997.

As mentioned above, the vehicle was going through some minor repairs in a shop in Melbourne when a group of thieves is believed to have broken in and stolen the two Ferraris. It still remains to be seen whether the owner decides to restore the car once more or if the damage was too big to do so.
