2,200 HP Camaro Z28, Twin Turbos on a 1960s Muscle Car

The drag racing scene nowadays is topped by Lamborghini Gallardos and Nissan GT-Rs that like to play on the 2,000 HP border and it's all thanks to the twin-turbo god. But what about the times when the high-octane deity touches the American metal of the good old times?

Perhaps a 1960s Camaro Z28 that can punish its rear wheels with around 2,200 HP is a proper answer to the aforementioned question. This is exactly what we see in the footage below, which offers us a pretty good taste of this extreme bodybuilder.

Sure, this is an extreme build, so when the car was taken to the Street Car Takeover drag racing event in Nashville, it was entered in the Unlimited Class. Still, the twin-turbo setup is matched by a twin-tank build, which means this guy can take his Chevy wherever he likes to.

Built, not bought

The owner bought the rolling chassis, but the rest of the monster is custom built. We shall delay the muscle info no more and mention the thing is motivated by a 509 cubic inch (8.3-liter) big block V8, which breathes with the help of twin 88-mm turbos.

At full boost, the V8 can deliver about 2,200 hp, but keeping it there is not easy, due to reliability issues. Thus, the fastest pass (we're talking 1/8 mile runs here) this Camaro Z28 has ever done is a 4.7s one.

At 3,400 lbs (1,542 kg) it's not a lightweight animal, but with 29 lbs of boost, which turned things up to aout 2,000 hp, the Camaro manged to pull the aforementioned stunt out.

This retro Camaro Z28 drag racer is not perfect though. For one thing, the car seems to get pretty bouncy during take-offs, which means the owner might want to lower that wheelie bar a bit.
