As expected, the CX-50 crossover has entered MY25 in the United States market with a new powertrain. The compact-sized crossover brings together hybrid goodies from Toyota and Mazda's 2.5-liter naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G engine. The system comprises three motors and a relatively small high-voltage battery pack.
In a similar fashion to the RAV4 Hybrid, all-wheel drive comes courtesy of a rear-mounted electric drive unit. Also similar to the RAV4 Hybrid, an eCVT replaces the Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission with six forward ratios.

Numbers? The list starts with 38 miles per gallon combined, which is 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers in metric vernacular and roughly 40% better than the non-hybrid setup with a torque-converter automatic. Combined, the system is good for up to 219 horsepower and 163 pound-feet (221 Nm) with 87-octane regular unleaded in the tank.

Mazda claims that CX-50 Hybrid saves around $575 yearly in fuel costs over the unassisted model. Towing capacity? That would be 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms), thank you, but only if equipped with genuine towing accessories. Mazda further waxes lyrical about cargo space, for the battery is located in the rear section of the floor. CX-50 Hybrid stands out from the lesser sibling by means of hybrid-exclusive styling cues, a revised lower front bumper, wheel designs, and the available red leather upholstery.

Preferred is the lowliest hybrid trim available, which comes with most of the goodies that one may find on the non-hybrid model. Think 17-inch wheels in black, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment with cordless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, eight-speaker audio, four USB-C ports, a power liftgate, Alexa Built-in, and heated front seats.

Pricing? The hybrid lineup starts at $33,970 for the Preferred versus $31,650 for the unassisted model, resulting in a $2,320 difference in MSRP. Said prices don't include $1,420 for the destination charge, which is $1,465 in Alaska. The CX-50 2.5 Turbo, meanwhile, starts at $48,800 for the Meridian Edition. Premium paint colors include the trademark Soul Red Crystal Metallic ($595), Machine Gray Metallic ($595), Zircon Sand Metallic ($450), Wind Chill Pearl ($450), and Polymetal Gray Metallic ($450).

Regardless of powertrain, the CX-50 received a number of enhancements for model year 2025, beginning with Alexa Built-in across the board. Safety-wise, additions include rear seat alert, vehicle exit warning, and Smart Brake Support with provisions for nighttime pedestrian detection and head-on collision mitigation.

The See-Through View function, Front Cross Traffic Alert system, Turn-Across Traffic Alert, and Front Crossing Detection of the CX-50 2.5 Turbo Premium are described by the manufacturer as being new as well. Arriving in dealers beginning August 2024, the combustion-only 2025 Mazda CX-50 will be joined by the CX-50 Hybrid in the latter part the year.

Manufactured at MTMUS in Huntsville, Alabama, the CX-50 is mechanically related to the CX-30 and Mazda3 rather than the Mazda CX-5. This, in turn, means torsion-beam rear suspension as opposed to a multi-link arrangement for the more affordable CX-5.
