2024 Mazda CX-90 Crashes Its Way to IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

Available with a mild-hybrid turbo I6 or a naturally-aspirated I4 plug-in hybrid setup, the CX-90 is Mazda's largest crossover yet. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the family-sized vehicle is also safe in the event of a crash.

The nonprofit organization says that both powertrain choices are Top Safety Pick+ material, TSP+ being the most coveted rating of the bunch. In terms of crashworthiness, the CX-90 aced the driver-side small overlap, passenger-side small overlap, moderate overlap, and updated side crash tests.

Vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention is also stellar, both in daylight and in the dark. The IIHS further commended how easy it is to secure a child seat using the LATCH anchors of the rear seats.

However, not everything is perfect. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the only area that needs improvement is headlight performance. Equipped with LED projector-style headlights, the CX-90 reportedly offers inadequate visibility on the left side of the road on straightaways. The curve-adaptive headlights of the S, S Premium, and S Premium Plus trim levels perform as intended, which is why only the CX-90 with the curve-adaptive headlights received maximum points.

The Mazda CX-9 is going the way of the dodo after model year 2023 in favor of the 2024 model year CX-90. As you might have already heard, the newcomer features a rear-biased platform and eight forward gears instead of the 9's six-speed auto.

Twinned with the two-row CX-60 that's not available stateside, the CX-90 will receive a two-row equivalent for the US market in the form of the CX-70. According to none other than Mazda, the 70's launch has been postponed to the spring of 2024.

It's not clear whether that means 2024 or 2025 model year. On the other hand, we do know that it's going to pack the very same inline-six and inline-four mills. In Europe, the CX-60 also comes with a mild-hybrid I6 turbo diesel the US will never get.

Dubbed e-Skyactiv PHEV, the plug-in hybrid I4 powertrain is rated at 323 ponies. The electric motor alone provides 68 kW, as in 91 mechanical horsepower. A high-voltage battery sporting a capacity of 17.8 kWh offers up to 26 EPA-rated miles (42 kilometers) of all-electric driving range.

Priced at $47,445 (excluding the destination charge) for the Preferred trim level, the CX-90 PHEV is available in better-equipped flavors that Mazda calls Premium and Premium Plus. The latter's highlights are Nappa leather seats, a 12.3-inch center display instead of 10.25 inches, and ventilated front seats.

As for the six-cylinder lump, Mazda offers two distinct tunes: 280 horsepower for the regular trims and 340 horsepower for the S, S Premium, and S Premium Plus. Indeed, it's those grades with the curve-adaptive headlights! Peak torque also differs, namely 332 and 369 pound-feet (450 and 500 Nm). At press time, the six-cylinder 2024 Mazda CX-90 carries a starting price of $39,595 (plus $1,375 destination charge).
