Mercedes-AMG has expanded its ‘Edition 55’ model lineup with the GLE SUV and GLE Coupe. Available in the GLE 53 SUV and Coupe and GLE 63 S SUV and Coupe, the two models now feature a few special touches inside and out and are limited to 55 units each for the U.S. market.
Set to arrive at dealers later this year, with pricing to be announced in due course, the ‘Edition 55’ models feature the ‘AMG’ crest on both sides, with a special contrasting foil highlighting it. High-gloss black accents can be seen on the front splitter, side mirror casings, window surrounds, and trim strip out back, depending on the exterior color.
All cars get privacy rear windows and a bespoke fuel filler cap in silver chrome, displaying the AMG lettering when the fuel filler door is opened. For the wheels, the Affalterbach brand chose a set of 22s with a cross-spoke design, finished in matte gray, with a high-sheen rim flange. To set them apart from the regular offerings, ‘Edition 55’ logos adorn the center caps. Each car is offered with a tailor-made AMG indoor cover.
Dressed in black and red, with stainless steel entry sills backlit in red, displaying the AMG lettering, the interior features two-tone red and black leather for the seats, door panels, and center console, with the latter being further enhanced by the embossed AMG crest. Additional AMG trim elements, in matte carbon black, ‘Edition 55’ lettering woven in red on the black floor mats, with red stitching, AMG Performance steering wheel with ‘AMG’ and ‘Edition 55’ badges, and a few other bits and bobs can be found here as well.
There are no surprises in the engine department, as the GLE 53 SUV and GLE 53 Coupe still pack the turbo’d 3.0-liter inline-six, making 429 hp and 384 lb-ft (521 Nm) of torque, backed up by a mild-hybrid system. The GLE 63 S SUV and GLE 63 S Coupe bring the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, pushing out 603 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm), also with mild-hybrid assistance.
