At long last, the 2023 Ford Ranger has started testing with production-ready parts on public roads. The prototype in the gallery is extremely similar to the unbranded design study from two years ago, and as expected, the styling is getting closer to that of the F-Series family.
Disguised in camouflage from the roofline to the door sills, the mid-size pickup truck before your eyes rocks full-LED headlights shaped like a C of sorts. Two horizontal bars, probably finished in chrome on higher trim levels, connect the headlights to emphasize width. Two round fog lamps and a black plastic lip pretty much sum up the redesigned front fascia, at least what we can decipher of it given the heavy camo.

Six-spoke wheels with a double-spoke design are wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler rubber boots, the rear suspension continues to rely on leaf springs, and the exhaust pipe on this particular prototype appears to be makeshift. Pictured with the biggest cab available and a 2020 Ford F-150 right behind it, the Ranger flaunts a front-facing camera right behind the rearview mirror.

In other words, Co-Pilot360 version 2.0 will offer a range of safety and driver-assistance systems. A few of the highlights include Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Pedestrian Detection, Intersection Assist, Dynamic Hitch Assist for the rearview camera, automatic on/off headlights, and automatic high-beam headlights. The next-gen Ranger further boasts SYNC 4 infotainment with OTA updates and the FNV electrical architecture.

Twinned with the next incarnation of the Volkswagen Amarok, the American pickup truck will continue to rely on the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo and 10R automatic transmission. Hearsay suggests there's enough room in the engine bay for a twin-turbo V6, and I can’t say that I’m surprised.

You see, Ford made it crystal clear that “the all-new Bronco two- and four-door models feature a Bronco-specific variant of Ford's new second-generation global mid-size truck architecture.” As such, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost definitely fits under the newcomer's hood. The rest of the world will get four- and six-cylinder turbo diesels in the Ranger, and going forward, the Bronco’s plug-in hybrid powertrain may be adapted for this application.
