Launched in 2015, the current BMW 7 Series tried to bring back some of the visual cues of the older generations while not going full-retro in the traditional sense.
That said, the mid-cycle facelift, or LCI as BMW calls it, did seriously change the luxury sedan’s overall look into that of a gothic cathedral on wheels, so the model is still not harking back to its forefathers.

This will change with the arrival of the seventh generation of the 7 Series, which not only somewhat rhymes but will also try to look boldly into the future while at the same time cherishing its past.

The two pre-production prototypes of the 2023 BMW 7 Series spy photographers recently caught in the open are still heavily clad in camouflage while cold-weather testing in the chilliest zones of northern Sweden.

Despite the camo, the luxury sedan’s proportions are clearly visible, and so are some of the somewhat retro design features that it will carry on the exterior.

The overall proportions are clearly evoking the first two generations of the 7 Series, with the trunk lid having a slight downward angle instead of being horizontal, while the clearly visible and very old-school Hofmeister kink in the rear doors is a pleasant addition as well.

The front end is where BMW will travel a road less-traveled lately though, since it seems that we’re looking at a highly camouflaged first-generation 8 Series E31 from certain angles.

It will obviously not sport the retractable headlights of the original 8 Series but the overall vibe of the front is somewhat similar, minus the oversized and lower-positioned kidney grille, of course.

The BMW iX represents a good preview of what we can expect inside the new 7 Series, with gargantuan screens taking space almost on the entire dashboard.

Still based on a platform that uses aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced polymers to increase strength while reducing weight, the 2023 BMW 7 Series should also feature some form of electrification all across the engine lineup, from mild-hybrid to plug-in hybrid versions, but there will also be an all-electric 7 Series wearing the i7 nameplate, which will arrive at a later date.
