Photographed uncamouflaged in October 2021, the Capstone is finally out of the bag with 22-inch chrome wheels that wouldn’t look out of place on a Cadillac Escalade. Sitting at the very top of the Tundra range, above the 1794, the Capstone is loaded with premium-oriented standard equipment.
As you’re well aware, the half-ton pickup is available with three powertrains based around a 3.4-liter V6 that’s erroneously advertised with a displacement of 3.5 liters. The flagship trim level comes with the i-Force Max, which is Toyota’s way of saying twin-turbo V6 hybrid pickup with 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet (790 Nm) of torque from 2,400 rpm.
Only available in CrewMax 5.5-foot configuration, the seventh trim level for the 2022 model year Toyota Tundra can be finished in six paint colors: Supersonic Red, Blueprint, Midnight Black Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and Wind Chill Pearl. The seats are wrapped in semi-aniline leather upholstery, and the premium-oriented theme continues with authentic Dark American Walnut open-pore veneer.
Powered running boards and Toyota BedStep also come standard, along with a 10-inch color head-up display and Towing Technology Package. While on the subject of truck-like things, the maximum towing capacity of the Capstone is 10,340 pounds (4,690 kilograms) whereas payload is rated at 1,485 pounds (674 kilograms). By comparison, the most capable Tundra available now offers 12,000 and 1,940 pounds (5,443 and 880 kilograms) towing capacity options.
Scheduled to arrive in dealership forecourts this spring, the Capstone also rocks Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 nannies that include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, and Rear Seat Reminder. The Japanese automaker’s basic new-vehicle warranty covers all components other than normal wear and maintenance items for 36 months or 36,000 miles (57,936 kilometers).
Additional 60-month warranties cover the hybrid twin-turbo V6 powertrain for 60,000 miles (96,561 kilometers) and corrosion with no mileage limitation. As an added bonus, the brand-new Tundra Capstone comes with the ToyotaCare plan that covers factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles (40,234 kilometers).
