The 911 is the Porsche we all want, but the Macan is the Porsche that sells best. Introduced in 2014 and refreshed twice so far, the compact crossover with Audi Q5 underpinnings will be spruced up one last time in 2021 for the 2022 model year.
Spied in Germany in the guise of a near-production prototype, Porsche worked hard to camouflage the visual updates in plain sight. Be that as it may, you can clearly tell that both bumpers have been chiseled to better align the Macan with the Cayenne’s exterior design language. The headlight graphic has also been changed, along with the side skirts and liftgate-mounted spoiler that integrates the third brake light.

The carparazzi report slight improvements to the interior as well, especially in terms of infotainment. They said “it will be more a technical update to bring the Macan up to date with the latest systems.” As far as the suck-squeeze-bang-blow is concerned, don’t expect any improvements or additions to the outgoing model’s engine list.

The entry-level specification is a four-cylinder affair with a single turbocharger, a Volkswagen Group-developed plant that cranks out 245 PS (241 horsepower). At the other end of the spectrum, the top-of-the-line Macan Turbo levels up to six cylinders and 2.9 liters for 440 PS (434 horsepower). If that displacement sounds familiar to you, well, Audi utilizes this engine in the RS4 Avant.

Sometime in 2022 at the Leipzig plant where the Macan is currently manufactured, the next generation will start rolling out with an all-electric vehicle architecture co-developed with Audi. Premium Platform Electric is how it’s called, and Porsche intends to use it for low-floor applications too. In other words, the successor of the Taycan will switch to these underpinnings for the sake of in-group synergies.

Speaking of the Taycan, the range-topping version is called Turbo S. Porsche is expected to utilize that nameplate for the Macan as well, and in this specification, you can look forward to a dual-motor setup and 700-plus HP.
