2022 Porsche Cayenne GTS Coupe Plays the Fake Exhaust Game

The Porsche Cayenne is already available in a variety of flavors - base, S, plug-in hybrid Turbo, and Turbo S (also a plug-in). They also added the "Coupe" model last year, but the range isn't complete without the GTS, which has just been spotted undergoing testing at the Nurburgring.

The GTS has always been one of our favorites versions of the Cayenne. The first one-and-a-half generations came with a big, naturally aspirated V8 engine. It sounded positively amazing and set the Porsche apart from virtually any other European SUV.

That changed in 2014, when the 2nd-generation model got a facelift. This is when Porsche started using the 3.6-liter turbo V6, similar to the one in the Macan Turbo. It still made a lot of power, but the GTS had lost its trademark.

As crazy as this might seem, we think the mojo is coming back to them. You see, affiliate brand Audi has just downsized models like the S6 and S7, giving them 3-liter diesels. But Porsche still appears to love V8s.

Starting in 2018, the two Panamera models have a GTS version that's once again V8-motivated. We're talking about the familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo, just one that's been asked to deliver less power - 453 hp and 457 lb-ft (620 Nm) of torque. The same engine should go into the Cayenne GTS, giving it a 0 to 62 mph (100 kph) time of about 4 seconds and a top speed of over 170 mph (274 kph).

The Cayenne GTS should come out next year as a 2022 model. It's going to compete with the BMW X5 M50i and the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53. Audi also has a nice 500 horsepower SQ7 you can buy for $85,000.

But the model in our spyshots is the GTS Coupe, which means we should compare it to the X6, GLE Coupe and SQ8. Speaking of the prototype, we got a really good laugh out of its exhaust pipes.

Porsche is committing the fake exhaust sin with the outer tips that are just decorative. However, the GTS has very real tips in the middle. They resemble the sports exhaust option for 911s and probably make towing impossible, but we still like them.

Update: We added a video of the Cayenne GTS Coupe so you can hear the exhaust in action. Does it sound more powerful than the Panamera?
