2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Will Be the Most Powerful Cayman Ever

Many purists frowned when they saw Porsche switching pretty much the entire 718 Cayman engine lineup from naturally aspirated flat-sixes to turbocharged flat-fours. Well, the GT4 and GTS 4.0 are still soldiering on with the big N/A 4.0-liter for the foreseeable future.

The naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six is derived from the 911 (992) 3.0-liter 9A2EVO engine, from which it lost the twin-turbocharger setup while gaining a massive amount of displacement, alongside a huge increase in RPMs.

Porsche is a big fan of thinly slicing up its models into smaller and smaller niches, so the 718 Cayman GT4 is about to receive an even more hardcore brother called the GT4 RS.

Originally, the model was expected to use a slightly more powerful version of the 4.0-liter mentioned previously, but recent rumors suggest that Porsche might go all-out with the track-ready 718 Cayman GT4 RS.

In the ‘regular’ GT4, the flat-six is good for a healthy 420 PS (414 hp) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque, but the RS may go past the 450 PS (444 hp) mark by quite a bit in order to make the model feel truly special.

Since the base GT4 already features the entire front axle and many rear-axle components from the 911 (991.2) GT3, you can expect the GT4 RS to borrow some bits and pieces from the GT3 RS, or even the mighty GT2 RS, including the rear-axle steering.

As you can see in the adjacent spy photo gallery, pre-production prototypes are still testing with little to no camouflage, so the 718 Cayman GT4 Rs should go official quite soon.

The special body kit includes NACA ducts on the front hood, GT3 RS-style outlets on top of the wider front fenders, air intakes instead of rear side windows, and a massive rear wing. All these aerodynamic pieces should translate into much higher downforce levels, even when compared to the already road-sticking GT4.
