The Outlander and Outlander Sport are by far Mitsubishi's best-selling models in the U.S., with the pair accounting for over 68 percent of the brand's sales so far this year.
Granted, the Mitsubishi lineup available to the American customer isn't particularly varied: you have the two we already mentioned (with the Outlander also coming as a PHEV), the Eclipse Cross, and the Mirage hatchback or sedan.

Even so, the Japanese company is on the rise. Third-quarter sales show a 1.5 percent growth over the same period last year and a massive 49 percent increase over the second quarter. Of course, like any other carmaker out there, Mitsubishi's activity in 2020 has been hampered by the global health crisis and is only beginning to show signs of recovery.

The importance of the Outlander model for the brand's presence in the North American market cannot be overstated, which is why the release of the 2022 Outlander can be a make-or-break moment. The company needs to strike that fine balance between offering enough novelty to make people excited but also enough familiarity to keep the core customer loyal.

Today, Mitsubishi is starting its teasing campaign ahead of the February 2021 reveal, and by the look of things, it seems as though Mitsubishi may have done just that. How can we tell that from the dark image released by the company, you ask? We can't but, ironically enough, this also happens to be the day images of the all-new SUV have leaked on the Internet.

If there's one thing the teaser image does is remove any shadow of a doubt over the accuracy of yesterday's leaked pictures: there is no question whatsoever we're looking at the new Outlander. A lot of the old SUV's visual elements can be found on the upcoming model as well, but each is reinterpreted in a new way.

The most striking aspect is probably the new headlight layout. The 2022 Outlander gets treated to the layered design that's become such a staple of modern SUV and pickup trucks. The chromed boomerangs running under the headlights make a comeback, featuring even more prominently this time thanks in no small part to the bulged radiator grille.

The Outlander is an iconic SUV for the company, so when we developed the next generation model, we took inspirations from our rich SUV heritage to realize a bold and confident styling with a solid stance that excites our customers,” said Seiji Watanabe, Division General Manager of Design (Head of Design), MMC. “The all-new Outlander is the first model epitomizing the new generation of Mitsubishi design and the frontrunner of our design strategy.”

Since Mitsubishi calls this picture the "first tease", we expect several others to follow until the final reveal next February. According to the manufacturer, the 2022 Outlander will first be released in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, with the rest of the international markets to follow.
