2022 Mercedes-Benz G 550 4x4 Squared Looks Real in Accurate Rendering

A few years ago, the "Squared" was the most amazing Mercedes that you could buy in America, a godly off-roader with a price to match. It was only available for a short while, but the Germans are bringing it back. Meet the all-new 2022 G-Class 4x4 Squared.

2022 Mercedes G-Class 4x4 Squared Looks Real in Accurate Rendering
The old one made almost every SUV on the road look like a regular car, its roof towering over traffic. We know the current generation of the G-Class is bigger than before, so we should end up with an even scarier monster.

A few days ago, the 2022 model was spotted undergoing testing, its trademark lifted suspension leaving you in no doubt that it was the "Squared." It should still be called the G 550 4x4 Squared ( G 500 in Europe), based on the shape of the grille. The engine is basically a watered down version of the one in the G 63 from AMG.

For the 2017 model year, the Squared offered 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque (610 Nm) from a 4.0-liter bi-turbo. The specs are currently the same for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G 550 model, though nobody buys a $200,000 Mercedes just to leave it stock. Over the years, we've seen multiple tuners doing everything from body kits to chopping the roof off.

The spyshots from a few days ago didn't leave much to the imagination. However, they were taken from afar, so we're thankful to Kolesa for rendering out the 2022 Mercedes G 550 Squared.

In many ways, it looks like the old model, but the proportions are slightly different. That's because the newer G-Class is visibly wider even before you install the fender flairs. Also, the face is more modern, thanks to those deep-set LED lights.

Unfortunately, not all the details match up to the prototype, which didn't have a bull bar at the front but included a rugged safari rack on the modified roof. Still, we're probably dealing with options in both cases. It's up to you if you want to camp on the roof of your rig or smash into boulders without a care in the world.
