The fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, internally codenamed W206, is currently undergoing the final stretches of pre-production prototype testing, with the car expected to be officially revealed in the next few weeks.
Unlike the current generation, the W206 will no longer feature a coupe and a convertible version, but the station wagon is set to live on despite being a no-show in the wagon-loathing United States.
There will not only be a new C-Class Wagon (called T-Modell or Touring Modell in Germany) but a more diversified lineup consisting of a large variety of versions, including two AMGs and an All-Terrain model.
While the American market has long lost its partiality toward station wagons and adopted all kinds of SUVs and crossovers, the rest of the world and Europeans in particular, still buy plenty of them to justify a new C-Class with a long roof.
Set to be offered with a variety of four-cylinder engines with a displacement of 1.5 to 2.0 liters for the gasoline versions and 2.0 liters for the diesel ones, the fifth-generation C-Class Wagon will also benefit from at least two different plug-in hybrids.
Its official unveiling should happen only a few months after its sedan brother, with March 2021 arguably being the best guess for when we will finally see it in the flesh.
That said, we already know how most of its exterior will look thanks to a set of spy photos of a non-camouflaged body being carried by a fork lifter from a few weeks ago.
Its avant-garde interior is also largely known, with Mercedes-Benz choosing to replace the floating and mostly analog center console of the current generation with a vertical touchscreen.
The base versions will feature a smaller touchscreen, as the climate controls will have their own island beneath it, but the fully loaded models will get a giant touchscreen that includes just about every feature of the car.
With a similar exterior size but improved interior space, including a more accommodating luggage compartment, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class T-Modell S206 should be once again one of its segment leaders.
