With the 2021 Ford F-150 pickup truck already out and about in its fourteenth generation, it was only natural for the Blue Oval to diligently prepare the arrival of its SUV counterparts. As it turns out, the company is prototype testing not just the 2022 Expedition but also its premium correspondent, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator.
Judging from the amount of camouflage wrap, the U.S. automaker is probably not very far away from the moment Expedition and Navigator fans are waiting for – namely, the official introduction. The prototypes have been adorned with the concealing wrap on less than half of their full-size bodies, with the bulk of it found on the front and a little bit less out back.
As far as we can tell, most of the profile and the entire greenhouse have been left in plain view, revealing a host of interesting new details about the exterior. For example, one of the lightly colored prototypes seems to preview an interestingly rugged trim – possibly the rumored new Timberline.
One can identify this adventurous new guise on the prototype wearing a set of new Goodyear Wrangler Terrain AT/S tires (perhaps 265/70 R18 in size), which seem to have upgraded rugged looks when compared to the Michelin all-terrain rubber already available on the Expedition FX4 trim.
Better yet, this prototype appears to have been enhanced with a taller overall ride-height, meaning it should also come with better approach and departure angles when trying to clear those massive front and rear bumpers. Last but not least, we also spotted a neat dual exhaust coming out the right side of the rear bumper.
Mind you, seeing both the 2022 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition from outside isn’t the entire story, because we also got the chance of a peek inside their cabins. This is our first look at the interiors of the 2022 models, and there’s massive news (pun intended) across the board.
More precisely, both the 2022 Lincoln Navigator and 2022 Ford Expedition reveal new center screens. Lincoln’s version is a larger touch display that maintains the classic landscape orientation, a key move to try and match the all-new 2021 Cadillac Escalade.
The Expedition, on the other hand, has been spied with a huge screen in portrait orientation. Naturally, we can imagine it was directly inspired by the layout premiered inside the 2021 Mustang Mach-E. It's also the bold approach Ford needs to counter the competition, such as the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon.
