Scheduled to launch by the end of 2021 as a 2022 model, the Grand Compass is the next logical step for the Jeep brand in the United States and Europe. Three-row crossovers are in high demand these days, more so if we’re talking about compact crossovers like the VW Tiguan Allspace.
The smaller brother of the Grand Commander for the Chinese market has been recently spied in Italy with camouflage from head to toe. Even the side mirrors have been hidden from prying eyes, which is a bit of an exaggeration if you remember that we already know what’s in the pipeline.
Familiar traits include the bi-color wheels and seven-slot grille with mesh inserts, but do remember that the all-new Grand Compass will adopt a handful of newities from the 2022 model year Compass. Still, as opposed to the five-seat crossover with the mid-cycle refresh, the exhaust pipe of this prototype exits from under the left of the rear bumper instead of the right.
Be that as it may, don’t get your hopes up for a different vehicle architecture. Like the Compass, the Grand Compass leverages the FCA Small Wide 4x4 platform that Fiat also utilizes for the 500X. As such, the entry-level engine option for Europe should come in the form of a 1.3-liter turbo while the United States will be treated to the 2.4-liter TigerShark.
Jeep may further sweeten the deal with a plug-in hybrid option, the 4xe, which combines the 1.3-liter turbo mentioned earlier with two electric motors. One of them serves as a generator and works in synergy with the engine, while the other is incorporated into the rear axle. The Compass 4xe for Europe features a reduction gear, and as per the NEDC2 testing cycle, the 11.4-kWh battery offers 50 kilometers (31 miles) of EV range.
Previewed in China last month, the 2022 Compass has also leveled up to a digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment system, and a slightly different front fascia from the outgoing model. Knowing Jeep, these updates will be shared with the 2022 Grand Compass as well.
