It was September 2018 when Ferrari confirmed the Purosangue, formerly called F16X. The Ferrari Utility Vehicle or FUV for short is set to arrive in 2022 under the codename 175, and it will be based on a front-mid-engined platform.
In a recent interview with Autocar.co.uk, chief technical officer Michael Leiters is “convinced on this car and the technical concept.” The purpose of both the engineers and the designers is to make the Purosange the utmost best SUV in the performance segment, a lot better than the Lamborghini Urus can be.

The Purosange is also important for Ferrari because it’ll share much of its underpinnings with the next generation of GT models, including the replacement for the 812 Superfast and GTC4 Lusso. The vehicle architecture can accommodate V6, V8, V12, and hybridized powertrains, and plug-in hybridization is another possibility as proven by the SF90 Stradale mid-V8-engined supercar.

As you can tell from the main photograph of the story, this particular slide from the Ferrari Capital Markets Day 2018 presentation reveals that four-wheel drive is on the cards along with 2+2 seating and a double-clutch transaxle transmission. The Prancing Horse also promises “highest specific power output plus electric motor” for every engine option planned for the Purosange and next-gen grand tourers.

“The challenge is to open a new segment for Ferrari. We always have very, very sharp positioning,” concluded Leiters without going further into the specifics. In addition to the Urus, the Purosangue has to prove itself worthy against world-class rivals such as the Bentley Bentayga, Aston Martin DBX, and Rolls-Royce Cullinan to a certain degree. McLaren Automotive doesn’t plan to introduce a sports utility vehicle yet, but who knows what might happen in the mid-term future?

Because the Purosangue will be so focused on the on-road dynamics, it’s likely the height-adjustable suspension and four-wheel-drive system will be limited in their scope out on the beaten path. Off-roading in a Ferrari sounds like a great idea, but an SUV to shame all SUVs in the twisties sounds even better to our ears.
