2022 BMW I4 Specs Confirmed, 370+ Miles Range Expected

At the end of last week, unconfirmed news surfaced about the capabilities of the upcoming i4 electric car from BMW. On Monday, November 18, the German carmaker officially confirmed them, thus releasing the first details of what is expected to be a serious competitor for Tesla and others.

The i4, which should be shown in production form sometime in 2021, will use the new generation eDrive technology – the fifth in line – that should give the car a range of more than 600 km (373 miles). It is the same technology that will be used before the launch of the i4 on the iX3 (2020) and iNEXT (2021).

This new eDrive has been redesigned from the ground up, and all of its components (electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery) are new.

In the i4, the electric motor should be good for a total output of 530 hp, on par with some present-day V8 engines the carmaker uses in its cars.

As for the battery, it will be able to withstand a charging capacity of up to 150 kW, meaning it could charge itself to 80 percent capacity in just 35 minutes, or gain 100 km of range every six minutes.

The i4 will become BMW’s first EV targeted at the premium mid-range segment. It will sell globally, and is just one of the 25 electrified vehicles the Bavarians plan to launch globally over the next five years.

“The BMW i4 combines the characteristic proportions of a 4-door coupé with the typical design features of a BMW i model,” says BMW about the place the new car is expected to occupy in its lineup.

“As such, the BMW i4 can be clearly identified as a BMW Gran Coupé – and equally clearly as an electrically powered vehicle.”

The full, yet limited details of the i4 confirmed by BMW can be found in the press release section below.
