2022 BMW 2 Series Looks Real in Latest Rendering Based on Leaks

BMW has its fingers in all the pies right now, but is unwilling to give up on a segment it helped create, the dynamic and compact RWD coupe. This is a preview of the all-new 2 Series Coupe, expected to wear the G42 internal designation.

BMW migrated many of its smaller cars onto a front-wheel-drive platform, evolved from the one MINI uses. We got the X1 crossover, as well as the Europe-only 2 Series Active Tourer.

More recently, FWD architecture was also used for more stylish models like the X2 or the 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is designed to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. However, the 2 Series Coupe still puts function before style, and that kind of ended up making it an ugly car.

A few days ago, the design of the new model got leaked via what we believe to be a design sculpture. We haven't heard a single word of praise about it, but maybe this rendering will help.

The Russian website Kolesa seems to have gotten the gist of it right. The new 2 Series has the same proportions as the old one, but with elements borrowed from a bunch of other small BMWs. We believe that all these images plus the leaked ones examine an M240i model, the softcore performance version that slots just under the M2.

The car should have the same 3.0-liter turbo unit as the M340i sedan and a bunch of other BMW models. But we don't yet know if the output is more 2020 Supra or 2021 Supra.

Unlike most sports cars that have just one or two types of engine, the 2 Series will get several, as well as the option to add AWD and auto transmission in most situations. We believe the range will go as low as a 220i with 197 hp, and there should also be a diesel or two. You can't say that about a Porsche Cayman, now can you?
