The fifth generation of the Audi A8 is not exactly selling like hot cakes in the highly disputed luxury segment, which is why Ingolstadt wants to go the extra mile for the mid-cycle facelift that the A8 D5 is soon to receive.
This is the first time we have caught a pre-production prototype of the upcoming 2022 Audi A8 facelift, and it seems like the model is just about ready to be unveiled.

Only the front and the rear of the car are camouflaged, but even so, the new headlights and bumper designs can be easily observed through the psychedelic wrap.

Following the same trend as more recently revealed Audis, the refreshed A8 D5 will sport a small kink under the main headlights, with the overall front end look essentially becoming like that of a much wider Audi A3.

Restyled front and rear bumpers and a new design for the single frame complete the exterior refresh, so the car won’t stray too much from the current model’s overall look, in keeping with Audi tradition.

The interior is also expected to get an improved infotainment system, and the active safety features introduced by the current generation of the A8 should be receiving an update as well, mostly to keep the car better prepared for Level 4 autonomous laws and regulations.

On the engine front, all current powerplants are expected to be augmented with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, including the diesels and the mighty 6.0-liter W12. Speaking of the W12, the current A8 might be the last Audi to ever feature it, albeit that’s not the biggest news regarding the mid-cycle refresh.

Multiple sources from Audi point toward the resurrection of the Horch pre-war luxury nameplate, which could adorn the most expensive A8 version ever.

Similar to what Mercedes-Benz is doing with Maybach nowadays, the Audi A8 Horch might feature a bespoke interior and exterior, with the highest quality materials encompassing the halo model, including the offer of a luxurious swan song for the now legendary W12 twin-turbo engine.
