Volkswagen has been letting people test-drive its Bulli electric van concept. However, the true spiritual successor to the classic model, the popular Transporter series, is seen here with more conventional powertrains.
The German company doesn't sell any vans in America, but is a big player over in Europe with its utilitarian Caddy and T-series models, plus the rugged Amarok pickup truck. The Transporter goes by many names and is equipped for serval jobs. But its main role is as either a cargo van or a people's shuttle, which is why this prototype is equipped with side windows, sliding rear doors and a rear wiper, even though the driver probably can't see out very well.

The T6 was just updated this year, so this new model is probably at least a couple of years away from being launched. It's quite bold for Volkswagen to let us see soo much of the design, not that it strays too far from the box shape.

The front looks a bit like the ID series of electric cars, especially the ID.3 hatchback. The main grille seems smaller than the side ones, a bit like the Up! city car. The technology package is probably going to witness the biggest upgrades, as a slew of features is being developed for the Golf 8.

Things like push-button light switches, digital dash, tablet infotainment, and gesture controls will make this dashboard look different. Also, expect more autonomy from the driving aids.

The Multivan series (the one with windows) is powered exclusively by 2-liter turbo engines, and that's unlikely to change much. Your basic 100 horsepower unit will be about the same, but more expensive models should have a 12-volt mild-hybrid battery helping them save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by about 10 grams.

Also, it's possible for Volkswagen to dump some of its GTE plug-in hybrid technology. We're talking about a 1.4 or a 1.5 TSI and an electric motor for a total output in the range of 214-245 HP.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
