The Sienna arrived in America 23 years ago, and over that time was one of the most popular models. It currently faces strong competition from the Pacifica and especially the Honda Odyssey, so it's perhaps not surprising that Toyota went with a bold look.

The new Sienna is particularly bold from the front, thanks to a giant grille. The way this combines with the LED headlights kind of makes it look like a crossover (such as the Highlander). Everybody says the XSE trim level is the best because it rocks the dark 20-inch wheels, which are the largest yet fitted, and that mesh grille.

The minivan owes its boldness to the Calty Design studio, aka the people who made all the cool Lexus concepts and the FT-1. They apparently borrowed ideas from Japan’s Shinkansen bullet train.

The new model is based on the TNGA-K modular platform, so it should ride and handle better than before. However, while its rivals shine through powerful V6 engines, Toyota marches to its own drums. It chose to make the new Sienna hybrid-only.

The gasoline-electric powertrain uses the familiar 2.5-liter four-cylinder motor in combination with two electric motors to deliver 243 horsepower. It sounds like more than enough, but we still imagine it would lose a drag race to the Honda Odyssey.

Toyota has quite a few other headlines to grab your attention, such as the 33 mpg combined, the ability to tow up to 3,500 lbs, and available AWD. Unlike the AWD in the Pacifica, this is more of an on-demand setup with an electric motor in the rear axle, just like the Prius.

The interior perhaps witnesses the biggest improvements, it's to be expected considering the old Sienna was getting long in the tooth. The new 9-inch infotainment screen sits atop of a minimalist dashboard. This cabin feels airy, and extra toys include a freezer and a vacuum.

Available trim levels will include LE, XLE, XSE, Platinum, and Limited. Since they removed the base L trim, the Sienna should now start from about $36,000 when it goes on sale later this year.
