Next year, a facelift for the Astra K will hit the market. This update was supposed to arrive a little sooner but was delayed to fully take advantage of Opel being merged with PSA.
This almost certainly means French engines in the German car, especially the 1.2-liter turbo and the new 1.5-liter diesel unit, which are essential for the Astra to stay relevant in the compact segment.
It's worth pointing out that Opel and PSA have a history together, co-developing the platform that underpins the Opel Crossland X and Citroen C3 Aircross. The Berlingo and Combo are also related.

According to French magazine Caradisiac, the Astra will make a full transition in 2021, when the 6th generation arrives. This will be underpinned by a new version of the EMP2 platform, which will be shared with the 308 and other compacts.
Currently, the Astra is one of the biggest hatchbacks in the segment at 4.37 meters, so it could actually shrink a little bit. However, thanks to better packaging, trunk space will be increased to around 400 liters.

The turbocharged gasoline units will range from 110 to 220 HP, capped by a 1.6-liter turbo like the one in the Peugeot 508 GT. So that means no pure hot hatch for Opel, which isn't surprising. A plug-in hybrid with about 200 horsepower is also planned.
Sharing platforms with the Grandland X means the technology package will be carried over. That means the safety systems, infotainment and, according to our source, even the styling.
