The Skoda Octavia RS may be one of the most unlucky prototypes we've seen in a while because less than an hour after it emerged for its first road testing session it got involved in a crash.
We're not talking about a massive crash, just a fender-bender with an Opel Zafira, which apparently wanted to change lanes in a construction zone but ended up in oncoming traffic and the path of the 2021 Octavia RS.

Our spies say the Skoda prototype's front end was completely demolished. And since the car couldn't be driven anymore, the Skoda people quickly covered it up with the emergency tarp and called a trailer.

What's the problem, it's only a Skoda? Yes, but it takes considerable time and effort to put one of these things together and it costs in the hundreds of thousands if not millions. Plus, there's no way of telling if this accident puts the development program behind schedule.

Last year, in an interview this week with Autocar, R&D boss Christian Strube was asked about a hybrid Octavia and said the following: “perhaps in an RS version – because it’s a good mix between sustainably and performance. If you drive 70 km, you can drive every day to work electrified, and if you want to have some fun at the weekend, you have an RS version. It’s really nice.”

The powertrain in question combines a 1.5 TSI with an electric motor for total output of 245 HP, which is more than the current Golf GTE. However, just because a PHEV might be developed doesn't mean normal RS models won't be greener as well.

Our info suggests the new model will be powered by the familiar 245 HP 2-liter turbo. However, it will feature a 12-volt mild-hybrid system helping reduce emissions a bit. A 2.0 TDI diesel model is also going to be offered, and it will have either 190 or 204 HP.
