At $14,295 excluding destination charge, the entry-level specification of the Mirage is one of the cheapest new cars in America today. Only the Nissan Versa and Chevrolet Sonic come close in the subcompact segment, but these two can’t compete with Mitsubishi in terms of warranty.
You see, the Japanese manufacturer offers 10 years or 100,000 miles (161,000 km) of coverage for the powertrain and five years or 60,000 miles (96,500 km) for new vehicle coverage. As if that wasn’t compelling enough, Mitsubishi throws in five years or unlimited miles of roadside assistance for the redesigned Mirage.

The most fuel-efficient gasoline vehicle that isn’t a hybrid features a revised front fascia and a more streamlined rear end for the four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. Sporty in appearance but a bit of a snail in real life, the Mirage now comes with L-shaped horizontal LED combination taillights.

Two new exterior colors have been added to the palette for the 2021 model year, namely White Diamond and Sand Yellow. Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection is now featured across the board, but only the range-topping SE is available with Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beam, LED headlights, and LED daytime running lights.

Interior refinements? The Mirage has been treated to a few of those as well, and the list of enhancements kicks off with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Smartphone Link Display Audio ships with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is very neat for such an affordable car.

The Carbonite Edition is the final newity for the 2021 model year, and as the name implies, carbon-pattern surfaces are of the essence. Available in six exterior colors, the visual package also includes contrasting red trim.

Only one engine is available for the cheapest car that Mitsubishi offers in the United States, and it’s a bit of a disappointment by all accounts. 1.2 liters and three cylinders add up to 78 free-breathing ponies and 74 pound-feet (100 Nm) of torque, which is noticeably less than the Versa and Sonic.

Adding insult to injury, Mitsubishi offers a five-speed manual when six forward ratios are the norm for a stick shift. The optional continuously variable transmission is more efficient, though, at 39 miles per gallon (6 liters per 100 kilometers) on the EPA-rated combined driving cycle.
