It seems like only yesterday we were talking about the 2012 S-Class and now Mercedes is almost done with the 2021 edition of its flagship, which is all-new from the ground up.
While the Germans have reworked everything from the speakers to the steering wheel, we've mostly been obsessed with two pieces of luxury "trim," the funky new infotainment tablet which is like having a laptop next to you while you drive and the flush-fitting door handles.
The Germans have tried their best to hide this feature on the 2021 model, first installing boxes to cover the whole assembly and then gluing fake handles on top. But the latest spy video from WalkoArt basically reveals the Range Rover Velar-like design.
We still don't know how the system works or who their parts supplier is. Tesla is widely seen as the innovator in this segment, having chromed handles that come out when you unlock it. However, they are also famous for breaking down all the time and costing $1,000 a corner to put right.
However, other manufacturers have similar setups. For example, Jaguar put something of this sort on Jaguar F-Type, the difference being that it's sort of hinged in the middle. Range Rover Velar also has a fancy pair of can openers, which may or may not work properly when covered with Siberian ice. The new Evoque inherited them and you can bet your SUV money the next Range Rover will too.
Getting back to the S-Class, the outline of its flush handles is not perfectly rectangular and we don't see any buttons on it either. This being the flagship of flagships, you can expect access to be made via a fancy new smart key, an app and/or wearable device (bracelet).
This video also seems to show the outline of some enlarged air intakes which should belong to the AMG Line body kit. No, not the fire-breathing V8 monster, just the appearance package so many people like to order.
