2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe Spied Getting Rady for Fight With X6 M

The M and AMG brands cut their teeth on sports sedans, coupes and roadsters, but SUVs are the real money-makers now. And while the X6 M has undeniably been a dominant force, an all-new generation of the GLE 63 Coupe will bring the heat.

AMG wasn't late to the SUV game, but it didn't have a "Sports Activity Coupe" until 2015. And even then, the X6 M was undeniably better to look at and more enjoyable to drive. We're not sure the tables have turned with these new generations, but at least the gap is going to be small.

The coupe makeover for the GLE still doesn't make all that much sense, especially when you look at bespoke sports vehicles like the Range Rover Velar or Audi Q8. However, there's no denying Mercedes is amazing at technology. The GLE 63 Coupe will be a true luxury vehicle with a class-leading interior and the option to have the semi-autonomous tech.

Air suspension will iron out all the bumps when you're don't want to be bothered by the road while the V8 engine will tear chunks from the rubber. Yes, it's the same 4-liter bi-turbo unit that you get in the G63, but we expect more power here, plus the GLE is a smidge lighter.

Frankly, even with about 612 HP, it won't be a record-setting machine in the same way as an 800 horsepower modified GLC 63. And with the Competition pack, the BMW could be a little faster. But in your quest for a luxury coupe+combo, it's going to be hard to ignore this one.

Of course, we haven't even seen the "normal" 2021 GLE Coupe, which will come with all the familiar engines and even a lesser AMG, the GLE 53 hybrid model. It won't be too long now, as all could be revealed around the time of the Detroit Auto Show next January.
