2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Bombards Nurburgring With Messerschmitt Sounds

Mercedes had a whole bunch of SUVs to show this month in Frankfurt. There was the new GLE Coupe, the fresh "400d" powertrain, a soft AMG version called the GLE 53 plus the confusing ESF concept. But we don't care about any of that; we just want the GLE 63 S.

By our calculations, the model is only a couple of months away from being revealed, perhaps at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Which leaves AMG engineers and test drivers just enough time for some more hardcore Nurburgring testing.

This spy video from YouTuber Automotive Mike compiles a lot of the latest footage, but it's not just one car. The white SUV is the GLE 63 while the dark silver model is actually the older GLC 63. As an added bonus, we also have the GLE 63 Coupe looking all mysterious in full camouflage.

Somehow, AMG is finding ways to make its latest exhaust systems sound better than everybody else, which is fair considering their cars also cost more. Where the new RS6 sound muted compared to its predecessor, this GLE 63 is every bit the Messerschmitt fighter as it drives down the Nurburgring straights at high speed.

WWII metaphors aside, the GLE 63 is also the best looking version of this new luxury model, with its oversized air intakes and flared out wheel arches. We can only hope that the "Coupe" version is a good match for the BMW X6 M and Audi RS Q8.

It should be in terms of power, though. While it's obvious they are going to use a 4-liter V8 here, the output isn't clear. The 612 hp of the E63 S could be just the start, as the GLE has already gained extra grunt from EQ Boost hybrid technology, which the E-Class lacks. Meanwhile, the two German rivals are likely to start from 600 hp, though the drag races are sure to be pretty close.
