This week carmaker Kia unveiled the newest variant of the K5/Optima sedan, this time in a fastback style that is “one of Kia’s sportiest designs to-date.“ And despite Kia not specifically saying so, it appears that from now on the K5 moniker will be used globally, not only in Korea.
To be made available on global markets starting the first half of next year, the new K5 Fastback marks the most significant departure from a previous generation ever seen in the carmaker’s range.
The car was penned by Kia’s global network of design studios, with people from the U.S., Europe and Korea chipping in ideas for the final product.
What resulted stands before us as an aggressive-looking machine, both at the front and at the rear. The car is longer and wider, but at the same time smaller when it comes to height, traits that contribute to its road-hungry stance.
“When we launched the K5 in 2010, it marked the dawn of a new era for Kia, with a design which heralded a step change in how the brand was perceived in markets all over the world,” said in a statement Thomas Schemera, Head of Product Division at Kia.
“With a fastback design, the new K5 is one of the sportiest cars that we have ever created; with its comprehensive range of cutting-edge technologies, revised engines and transmissions, and a luxurious new interior, it’s also one of the most advanced.”
Under the hood, the carmaker will fit a revised range of Smartstream engines that in certain configurations will be linked for the first time to a new all-wheel-drive system.
In North America, the core of the lineup will be a 1.6-liter T-Gdi that develops 180 ps and 265 Nm of torque, while at the top of the range there is a 2.5-liter T-GDi turbocharged gasoline engine that develops 290 ps and 422 Nm of torque.
There will also be other powertrain options on the table, and all engines will be paired to either six- or eight-speed automatic transmissions. For the 2.5-liter T-GDi, a new eight-speed wet double-clutch transmission is also available for the first time.
