There was a time a few decades ago when true car enthusiasts with enough financial power had no problems setting up their own car making shops to take the vehicles closest to their hearts to new levels of performance. This was a particular trend in the U.S., where dealers where in the habit of coming up with their own versions of the cars they sold.
Now, such a habit is not so widespread, but that doesn’t mean it no longer exists. Take Ineos, a carmaker created in 2017 by a rich British man, owner of a large chemicals company, upset he couldn’t get his hands on a full Land Rover Defender production line.

The company wasted no time in getting to work, and just three years after it was formed we get the first images of the project it is working on. Called Grenadier, it is a visual copy of the original Land Rover Defender and the G-Class that could use a BMW six-cylinder engine (among others to be offered), and other BMW vehicle tech.

Ineos is presently in the middle of a slow unveiling of this SUV that is supposedly not based on anything that existed before. So far, we’ve got a few details from the official website on the frame and axles and suspension.

The SUV (Ineos is not calling it that) is built on a ladder frame - a type of structure that has been used in off-roaders for decades - created with the help of an unnamed yet “experienced” car making company. On it, a beam axle suspension system has been fitted, supplied by Carraro, a company that usually specializes in building tractors.

The finished product, which is on track of being unveiled sometime by the end of the year, has been captured on camera for the first time by our spy photographers, and you can enjoy it (as much as the camo allows it) in the gallery above.
