2021 GMC Canyon Starting Price Revealed, Base Truck Costs $27,595

For the 2020 model year, the Canyon retails at $23,395 for the SL Extended Cab with the Long Box, 2WD, and six-speed automatic transmission. Come 2021, the SL and SLT will be gone while the Canyon trim has been replaced by the Elevation Standard at $27,595 before destination charge.

Compared to the 2020 equivalent, you’re looking at a difference of $700 for the 2021 model. As for the most expensive specification available, the Denali Crew cab with the Long Box, 4WD, and 2.8-liter Duramax turbo diesel is $49,625 according to GM Authority. Indeed, the premium truck brand made changes across the board to the 2021 model year Canyon.

One of those changes covers the off-road trim that was previously known as the All Terrain. Now called AT4, this spec comes standard with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac rubber shoes and aluminum wheels, an Eaton G80 rear diff, four-wheel drive with hill-descent control, and red tow hooks.

Developed to appeal to those “who live an active lifestyle” according to head honcho Duncan Aldred, the Canyon AT4 is trying to do the same thing as the Sierra AT4. To the point, it aims to “attract new customers from outside GMC” with either a 3.6-liter V6 or a 2.8-liter turbo diesel powerplant.

Lesser specifications still rely on the 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder mill with VVT and 200 horsepower (203 PS) on tap. It’s not a bad engine per se, though it shouldn’t be on your list if you plan on towing with the Canyon because it features only 191 pound-feet (259 Nm) of torque at 4.4k rpm.

On a different yet related note, have you heard that General Motors is investing $1 billion in the Wentzville assembly plant where the next-generation trucks will be made? Of those, $500 million will be used for Colorado and Canyon production. Both are expected to roll out in 2023.

To feature an evolution of the outgoing chassis, the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are rumored to switch to the L3B four-cylinder turbo as the only engine choice. In the Silverado 1500, the 2.7-liter “Tripower” develops 310 horsepower (314 PS) and 348 pound-feet (471 Nm) at 1,500 rpm.
