By definition, the GMC Canyon is not the type of truck to shy away from off-road adventures. Sharing much with its close cousin Chevrolet Colorado, the Canyon sells enough to remain in production and, at times, expand its family with the introduction of new versions.
High on the snow-covered slopes of the Colorado Mountains, the Canyon was gifted today (January 13) with an AT4 variant, meant to “appeal to midsize truck customers who live an active lifestyle.” This is the first time the Canyon range gets an AT4 variant, one that has proven quite popular on the Sierra, for instance.

For this particular pickup too AT4 means both visual and capability upgrades. As far as styling goes, the Canyon AT4 brings dark chrome finishes, larger grille, and red recovery hooks. On the interior there are unique Kalahari stitching and AT4 headrest embroidery.

Off-roading will feel more natural than ever before thanks to the fitting of 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, wrapped around 17-inch aluminum wheels. The suspension and its hill descent control capabilities have been tuned, and the four-wheel-drive system comes with an Eaton G80 rear automatic locking differential.

As these changes could mean drivers will now go for more treacherous roads, so the Canyon has been fitted with a transfer case skid plate.

Engine-wise, the truck remains powered by the same 3.6-liter V6 engine that develops 308 hp, but it is also available with a 2.8-liter diesel.

“The new 2021 Canyon AT4 broadens the appeal to midsize truck customers who live an active lifestyle,” said in a statement Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC.

“Much like the Sierra AT4 has attracted new customers from outside GMC, the Canyon AT4 will attract outdoor enthusiasts looking for a premium midsize truck to GMC with the capability, technology and refinement they’ve come to expect.”

Pricing for the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 was not announced.
