Even after the launch of the new 3 Series, the Genesis G70 is still one of the best sedans in its class. But it's about to get better for the 2021 model year, when a major refresh and bigger engines will be introduced.
This is the G70 facelift making its complimentary rounds of the Nurburgring. The prototype looks ready and should be revealed by the end of the year, but it hasn't been a common occurrence at this track.
Yet we know a lot of testing went on at Hyundai's Korean test tracks, and the G70 was already agile, responsive, and punchy. Right now, when you downgrade from the top-of-the-line G70 3.3T, you end up with the 2.0T.
The output is fine on paper at 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. But the 330i makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), which is a problem. To fix that, Genesis will completely replace the engine instead of increasing turbo boost.
In its place, you'll get a 2.5-liter turbo that is being implemented in a number of other cars, ranging from the Sonata N-Line to the GV80 luxury SUV. Usually, the bigger engine makes about 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. Take that, BMW!
We know that this prototype is the 2.5T because Genesis confirmed the engine and due to there being only two exhaust tips on the right of the car. The G70 updates will also include new bumpers that integrate a sportier grille and headlights that are split down the middle.
With 300 horsepower, the base G70 will be able to do the 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) sprint in about 5.2 seconds. That's going to be a decent deal for something with real luxury at under $40,000. But Genesis will still give you the option of a performance model.
It might not be in the same league as the M3 and Alfa Giulia QV, but the V6-powered G70 will have 380 horsepower and 390 lb-ft from a new 3.5-liter "Smartstream" T-GDI.
