Ford may not have done this on purpose, but it turned out to be a smart strategy. Releasing the Mustang Mach-E close to the end of the year meant every car journalist had the experience fresh in their memory as they were looking for the winners of the annual awards.
More than a year after its official unveiling, the first Ford EV developed from the ground up was ready for its first reviews, and pretty much everyone who's driven it has walked away impressed. And we're not just talking about a "not bad for a first try" kind of reaction, but proper surprise at the quality and thoroughness of Ford's product.

There is one line you're likely to come across in any Ford Mustang Mach-E review: "it's much better than expected." This should make its manufacturer both proud and worried: proud because it has put a very competitive product on the market and worried because, as it turns out, the public didn't really think it was capable of doing that.

The Mustang Mach-E was always going to draw comparisons with the Tesla Model Y, and, depending on which parameters you focus on, you can or can't say it's a better car. For instance, the Model Y is always going to win in the performance department, even though the Mach-E isn't particularly slow. The Tesla also has a longer EPA-rate range, but again, Ford's newcomer isn't all that far behind.

However, the Model Y has no chance of matching Ford's EV in terms of refinement and build quality. The materials used inside the cabin have a much more premium feel to them, and the design will feel more familiar to most people who are just making the switch to electric vehicles.

All things considered, the people at Green Car Reports considered they had seen enough to give the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E the Best Car to Buy 2021 award. "It’s the past, present, and future of the automobile, all wrapped in one," the author of the article noted, explaining how the former is covered by its name, the middle by its promised availability, and the latter by its electric powertrain and connectedness.

Expect the Mach-E to gather more accolades in the coming months, which should be the incentive Ford and all the other legacy carmakers need to accelerate their electrification efforts. It's a sign that if you don't try to trick the public with a compliance-only EV but make one that's both good and available, people will recognize its merits. 2021 is going to be an interesting year in the automotive world, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E might play a role in that.
