2021 Ford Bronco “Pickup Truck” Rendering Doesn’t Look Half Bad

Technically speaking, the mid-size Bronco that Ford will unveil in July 2020 is a pickup truck under the skin. Based on the Ranger and built in the same factory as the workhorse, the off-road SUV is also certain to feature removable roof panels akin to the Freedom Top of the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator.

Question is, will the Bronco’s rearmost roof panel come off in a similar fashion to the Freedom Top? This is the variant proposed by pixel artist Mo Aoun, and at first glance, you may be fooled into thinking that it’s a good ol’ pickup.

However, the cargo area is too small for workhorse duties and the payload wouldn’t match that of the Ranger with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo. The rendering also includes a partition between the passenger area and cargo box, an element that the life-sized 2021 Ford Bronco doesn’t feature.

However, there is hope for a pickup derivative of the Bronco. Remember what Jeep did for the 2020 model year with the introduction of the Gladiator? Wrangler looks and off-road prowess, a little truck capability, and voilà!

Given that the Gladiator starts at $33,545 before destination charge and the JL Wrangler kicks off at $28,295, the Ford Motor Company would also make a tidy profit from converting the Bronco into a pickup truck. Oh, and by the way, don’t forget that Bronco is actually a sub-brand of off-road vehicles.

In the same way the Mustang nameplate has been used on the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Ford would pull off a similar trick with the mid-size Bronco. As for the compact Bronco Sport that shares the C2 vehicle platform with the Escape, a unibody pickup is possible.

A sub-Ranger trucklet has been rumored since July 2018, and in January 2019, global markets president Jim Farley confirmed that Ford is developing this vehicle. At the present moment, Maverick appears to be the nameplate of choice based on a design patent of the tailgate. Bronco Maverick doesn’t sound bad at all, but bear in mind the Bronco prefix is merely speculation.
