Evolutionary design - for decades, German car brands used this trick to grow. It ensured the continued support of their customers. No design risks were also good for the buyers, as it ensured good values come resale time. However, BMW has been rocking the boat with its bold new grilles.
Lexus was arguably the first luxury automaker to break out with bold new grille designs. And even though the spindle grille turned out to be a good thing, people didn't give any credit to the Bavarians when they started going big.

In a recent interview design boss, Adrian van Hooydonk told Autocar that "as a company, you have to keep moving. The minute you start standing still, you become an easy target. The market is very competitive now, more than ever. But, the hardest thing to do is make changes while you are successful. If you are no longer successful, people immediately start saying you need to make changes, but then you are in panic mode."

The big changes are widely perceived to have started with the X7, as well as the 7 Series facelift. Despite many jokes cracked by the press, customer reaction has actually been good, as the models feel fresh, not evolutions of previous BMWs.

But the X7 wasn't the purest Bimmer, to begin with, wheres the 4 Series and its hot M4 brothers are sitting at the very core of the brand's identity. When the concept was revealed recently in Frankfurt, folks were outraged over the size of the double kidneys.

But how bad can it be? Well, if the 2021 BMW M4 ends up looking anything like this Carwow rendering, we'll be happy. And it should, as the fresh face lines up with our recent spyshots, as well the look we gave you at the M3 sedan.

Looking at these two monsters, you have to wonder why other new Bimmers weren't launched like this, especially the M8 or the performance SUVs.
