For a while, it was looking like people had the new M3 all figured out - more power, AWD on some models and evolution in design. BMW didn't like that and switched things up with a giant grille that now dominates the front fascia.
To be honest, classic Bimmers had this style of vertical kidneys as well, so you can't say it's ugly just because it's new. But we've kind of gotten used to small, incremental changes, wheres this is like painting graffiti on top of a Rembrandt.
Our latest spyshots from the Nurburgring showing the 2021 BMW M3, codenamed the G80, undergoing its usual testing. Its camouflage is pretty thick, but we can still make out the new grille quite easily. This shows wide-set vertical bars that continue all the way down the chin splitter, cut up by the number plate in the middle. How will that even look in states where you don't need a front plate?
This could be the last great M3 ever built, as BMW, along with all the other German automakers, will switch its focus to electric premium cars. And while the shape of those nostrils could be upsetting, everything else will be awesome.
BMW will give us its best 3-liter engine yet, capable of making up to 510 horsepower with better response times and lots of juicy torque. The M-tuned xDrive should still have a mode that allows you to drift while maximizing traction for those quick launches. And at least one model should have RWD and a manual gearbox, the M3 Pure, which is supposed to be stripped of all non-essentials.
The interior will be better too, but we're a little concerned about the aural experience, as sound regulations are muting every outspoken car. Still, there's nothing that can't be fixed with a good set of aftermarket pipes.
