There is no cutting corners when it comes to the new 4 Series coupe BMW is currently working on. Currently in the final testing stages, the car should aim when ready “straight to the top of its segment in terms of sporting prowess and the driving experience.”
The new 4 Series has been spied time and again in various places, from the Arjeplog winter testing center in Sweden to the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. As the launch date approaches, the test prototypes have moved closer to home, on the roads and motorways around Munich, where the finishing touches and tuning are being made.
There is no official date set for the presentation of the new incarnation of the premium two-door machine, but that moment is probably close. So close in fact that the Germans feel comfortable enough to spill more details than ever about it.
Built to be slightly more aerodynamic than the 3 Series it is related to – we’re told to expect a 0.015 improvement in drag coefficient, for instance - the new 4 Series charge will be led by the model BMW baptized M440i xDrive Coupe.
Powering this model will be a straight-six engine rated at 374 hp when linked to an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission – the all-wheel-drive system comes as standard. The powerplant is fitted with a mild-hybrid system comprising a 48V starter-generator and a second battery used to take some of the load off the engine.
The system gives the 4 Series an 11 hp nudge in times of need, such as during getaways and sprints. Combined with a chassis that is described as “a more individual composition than ever before,” the M440i promises to be a very exhilarating ride, both compared with what came before it and what customers going for the 3 Series are getting.
Expect more details on the new 4 Series to surface soon.
