Following BMW's lead with the X6, many automakers now offer their premium SUV models with a sexier "coupe" body style. This is a way for them to increase sales without having to develop a model from scratch. Not Audi, though, not until the Q3 Sportback, and now this electric model too, the e-tron Sportback.
We knew there was going to be a coupe version of the e-tron almost from the start, as Audi was keen to show all its plans though concepts. But this is the closest we've seen it to production readiness, and it doesn't look 100% like the concept.
The main difference is the shape of the grille, which is more like that of the regular e-tron. It's got fake lovers all over with the ones in the middle left open. The main problem with designers trying to connect the e-tron Sportback to normal Q models is that some of them are actually more striking. Where's the guy who made the Q8? Because he clearly had more creativity.
We think the Sportback EV needed to be special since the normal e-tron isn't doing too hot. It registered only 434 sales in America for September, taking up just 2.7% of the EV market. Sure, lower range compared to a Tesla has something to do with it, but Audi has always been a design-led company, and they are not playing to their forte.
The battery capacity of the Sportback should give it a similar range of about 204 miles (348km). At least fast charging at 150kW will give you about 80% capacity in 30 minutes or your money back.
Power-wise, its twin motors should pack a combined 265 kW (355-hp US or 360 HP in Europe), with an overboost of 300 kW (402-hp) for seconds of fast overtaking. A performance version should be on its way as well, the first of its kind.
