2021 Audi A3 Sedan Is Here Bigger, Meaner and More Connected

In Audi’s world, the A3 is one of the pivotal nameplates. Introduced in the 1990s, the A3 marked the German carmaker’s return to making compacts after a couple of decades of drought, but also the start of a very successful line.

Presently, the A3 comes in hatchback, sportback sedan and convertible variants. With the exception of the Sportback, which got a new generation for the 2020 model year, the rest are waiting for new variants, and Audi started the roll-out this week with the newest interpretation of the sedan.

Described by the carmaker as the better second generation, the new A3 comes to the market with slightly increased dimensions, a major evolution when it comes to its connectivity capabilities, and a range of refreshed engines.

Visually, the new A3 sedan borrows the more aggressive styling of the newer models rolling out factory doors, with the large Singleframe grille at the front and new headlights. The rest of the body has been tweaked as well, resulting in a slight improvement of 0.04 point to its drag coefficient, now sitting at 0.25.

Under the hood there are three engines, two TFSI (versions of the same 1.5-liter) and one TDI, with power outputs rated at 150 ps for both the gasoline and diesel. The TFSI engine linked with the S tronic dual-clutch transmission also makes use of a mild-hybrid system to help cut down emissions.

Improvements made in terms of connectivity include the fitting of the MIB 3 infotainment platform (connectivity via LTE, Wi-Fi) and the inclusion of the recently-debuted Car-to-X services, limited as they are presently.

Audi plans to start selling the second generation of the A3 sedan in Europe this summer, with prices starting from €29,800 for the top of the range gasoline. The entry level would arrive a little later, priced from €27,700.
