2021 Aston Martin DBS GT Zagato Revealed with Shapeshifting Front Grille

Sometime next year, Aston Martin is expected to begin selling what is likely to become the most exciting pair of cars on the market: the DBZ Centenary Collection. Comprising a DB4 GT Zagato Continuation and a DBS GT Zagato, the series will bring with it rarely- or never-before seen features.

And it should, as the British carmaker plans to charge £6 million ($ 7.48 million) for each of the 19 pairs it will be building.

Since the Centenary Collection was announced in September last year, a number of details about the cars have surfaced. The spotlight however belonged more to the DB4 than to the DBS.

This week, Aston published a few more renderings of the DBS, revealing what it calls “the final production intent exterior.“ And there are a few interesting points to make.

The car has its roots in the DBS Superleggera, but will come to life with a few attributes that will only belong to its bloodline. The front grille, for instance. And not just any grille, but a shapeshifting one.

Aston says this element of the car is made of 108-individual diamond-shaped carbon fiber pieces that fit in nicely with the rest of the exterior when the car is stationary. When the engine is started though, all these pieces begin fluttering to allow air to come in toward the V12 engine.

Another important element of the car is the rear view central mirror, which is this case is more of a screen, as it renders images captured by a camera fitted at the back. This was needed because the DBS GT will have no rear window, but only a full-length carbon fiber roof.

“Form and function are constantly in battle with one another, but this is a great example of where we have been able to utilize modern technologies to ensure no concession has been made on either side,” said in a statement Aston’s chief creative officer, Marek Reichman.

“It was important to me and our teams to deliver something as beautiful as the original DB4 GT Zagato and I feel that we have achieved that with this model and I can’t wait to see it in the metal.”

The DBS GT Zagato will begin manufacturing in 2020. By that time, construction of its sister car, the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation, should be done with.
