Even though it’s been around for quite some time, the XC40 T5 Twin Engine is set to arrive in the United Kingdom in February 2020. Orders can be made as of today, and pricing for the R-Design trim level starts at £40,905 if you want the plug-in hybrid powertrain.
There’s also the R-Design Pro at £42,305, then come the Inscription and Inscription Pro at £41,255 and £42,305 on-the-road. As you can tell, Volvo is charging a lot of money for a front-driven crossover with a three-cylinder turbo and an e-motor. At that price point, BMW is much obliged to sell you the X2 M35i with 306 horsepower on tap and xDrive AWD.

Strong demand for the XC series as well as the XC40 helped Volvo sell 47,796 vehicles in the month of August 2019, up 7.6 percent compared to August 2018. As for the year-to-date period, the global volume for the Swedish automaker is up 10.2 percent thanks to the three crossovers with plug-in hybrid options and a diversified range of passenger cars.

Turning our attention to the T5 Twin Engine, the 1.5 is rated at 180 horsepower while the e-motor makes do with 82 horsepower. A combined output of 262 horsepower is nothing to scoff at, but then again, the eco-minded drivetrain is a bit lacking in terms of acceleration (7.3 seconds to 62 mph). Top speed is rated at 127 mph, and the WLTP fuel consumption is 141.1 miles to the gallon. Electric range? 28.6 miles, thank you!

Given that the battery has 10.7 kWh of capacity, Volvo is playing second fiddle to newcomers in the compact luxury segment such as the A 250 e from Mercedes-Benz. From 15.6 kWh, the five-door hatch promises up to 42 miles in EV mode and 6.6 seconds to 62 mph.

On the other hand, it’s worth remembering the XC40 in T5 Twin Engine flavor is the first plug-in hybrid in the compact luxury SUV segment. "This model brings our electrification program to the heart of our model lineup,” said Kristian Elvefors, managing director of Volvo Car UK.
