This is the drag race we've been waiting to see ever since the new 2020 Toyota Supra came out. Everybody knows it's based on the same platform as the BMW Z4, but which is the faster sports car?
Depending on what you read, the new Supra is a huge let-down, since it's powered by a BMW inline-6 rather than Toyota's own unit. The specs aren't the same all over the world, though, so we need to get that out of the way.
In Britain, where Carwow shot this drag race, the GR Supra is rated as 340 HP (metric, 335 bhp), which is the same output as the BMW Z4 M40i. However, in other markets either one or both pump out 382 HP from the same B58 powertrain.
It also doesn't matter that mutch what the official numbers say, since a recent dyno test proved the Supra is putting down 376 bhp or 381 HP, plus a bit more than the factory torque. But people will still say BMW is short-changing Toyota unless this video gets out. What happens? The GR Supra demolishes the roadster.
Mat Watson believes this has something to do with the coupe body being lighter. But Toyota also did a better job with the launch control system, so you could say it built a better BMW than BMW. And on the second run, it just looks like the Supra just has more power.
The brake tests are always the least consistent, so we're not surprised that the heavier Z4 M40i somehow managed to stop first. Will this influence anybody's buying decision? Probably not, as the BMW Z4 is even more of hairdresser's car than before. However, it's worth pointing out that at GBP 52,700, the Supra is more expensive than the range-topping BMW Z4 M40i which starts at £49,050. Usually, it's the roadsters that cost more.
