On Friday, Japanese carmaker Toyota unveiled the 12th generation Corolla sedan. With all the changes in design and powertrain options, it’s likely this new variant will keep to the legacy of past sedans wearing the name, which sold in excess of 46 million units since the nameplate’s introduction in 1966.
Adding to the appeal of the new Corolla is of course a power plant for the moder age, a hybrid variant which will be offered for the first time in the United States for the sedan version. Although no other details are available on what exactly this hybrid car will be all about, the Japanese promise more mileage than ever before.
“For the first time in the United States, the Corolla will be offered in hybrid form to add even more impressive fuel efficiency to its list of accolades,” said Toyota in a statement.
Until the hybrid is revealed,Toyota confirmed the internal combustion engines the Corolla will be offered with. The entry level is the 1.8-liter engine available on the previous generation as well, but tweaked to develop more horsepower. This will be available on the L, LE, and XLE trims.
The top of the range XSE and SE grades however will get their punch from a brand new 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder unit that develops 169 horsepower.
The hybrid version that will join the ICE offering will however not be limited to the United States. The carmaker has plans to sell the car in this configuration in close to 100 countries, a much broader market than the current generation was allowed access to.
The new Toyota Corolla sedan will be on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of the month, where all the details on the hybrid will also be announced.
The car will probably go on sale next year in the U.S. as well, with prices yet to be announced.
