As far as fuel efficiency is concerned, the Corolla Sedan now has an eco-friendly model with Hybrid Synergy Drive from the Prius. Toyota says the newcomer is capable of “at least 50 mpg” on the combined cycle, which is seriously impressive considering the price point of the compact sedan.
The Hybrid Synergy Drive has three settings, starting with Normal. Flick the switch into Eco, and the vehicle limits the power “in response to light to moderate accelerator pedal input.” To whom it may concern, Toyota also offers Sport mode for superior acceleration.
A 1.8-liter engine serves as the beating heart of the system, running 13.0:1 compression and making the most out of the Atkinson cycle for maximum energy from the fuel. Two electric motors complete the power-/drivetrain. One takes care of electric propulsion and both are tasked with charging the battery.
Underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture, the Corolla Sedan Hybrid has the nickel-metal hybride battery sandwiched under the rear seat. This packaging solution translates to more trunk capacity and allows the rear seatback to split-fold 60/40 for carrying more luggage.
Going on sale in the spring of 2019 for the 2020 model year, the Corolla Sedan Hybrid comes as standard with Entune 3.0 Audio that includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, six speakers, Wi-Fi Connect, satellite navigation, Siri Eyes Free, voice recognition, and Bluetooth media streaming. Of course, safety is another highlight of this car.
Toyota makes a case for Safety Sense 2.0, the safety suite that integrates Pre-Collision System, Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steer Assist, and Lane Tracing Assist. On top of that, customers are also treated to Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist.
15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels come standard, wrapped in low-rolling resistance tires to bring the point home in regard to the eco-friendly character of the Corolla Sedan Hybrid. Somewhat surprising for the segment, Toyota thought that multi-link rear suspension is better than a torsion bar for this model, translating to better handling and ride comfort compared to the previous generation of the Corolla Sedan.
