Last month, at the Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne, Germany, Japanese bike maker Suzuki showcased the new Katana sports motorcycle. At the time of its unveiling, the model was shown in classic silver, a tribute to the original decades-old bike.
On Tuesday, at the EICMA show in Milan, the Black variant of the model was unwrapped. As its name says, nothing but the paint on the body sets this bike apart from its silver sibling.
The Katana is a brand new bike, meant to bring back the glory of the original model shown for the first time in 1980. The bike is retro in design, taking some of its cues from back in the day, while at the same time using the most modern of technologies.
The frame of the bike is made of lightweight, twin-spar aluminum common on the GSX-S1000 series. Powering it is an inline four-cylinder taken off another Suzuki high profile motorcycle, the GSX-R1000 K5.
For use in the Katana, the engine has been heavily updated, now being capable of developing 150 ps at 10,000 rpm, and a peak torque of 108Nm at 9,500rpm.
The bike comes with three-mode traction control, ABS, inverted front forks, Brembo radial-mount front brake calipers, all offered as standard.
“The all-new KATANA is a great demonstration of Suzuki’s future,” said in a statement at the time of the bike’s launch Suzuki’s president, Toshihiro Suzuki.
“There is much more to come from Suzuki, as we maintain our customer-focused perspective and bring innovative and exciting motorcycles to people around the world.”
The Black Katana will become the second color on offer for the bike when it will go on sale in the coming months. No details on pricing has been yet offered.
The new Katana is the first of ten new models Suzuki plans to launch by 2021.
