The moment all American Subaru fans were waiting for has arrived: on Monday, October 14, the Japanese carmaker announced pricing for the first ever Subaru Tecnica International-tweaked car to sell outside of Japanese borders: the STI S209.
This car will exclusively be available for American buyers, and only 209 units of it will ever be made. With that in mind, Subaru decided the price sticker would look great if the numbers on it read $63,995, plus the $885 destination and delivery charge.
Whether that’s a lot to ask for or not, that’s for customers to decide. But they’ll have to keep in mind that this car is the most powerful Subaru ever before making that assessment.
The car is based on the WRX STI Nurburgring Challenge racecar, the one that earned the 24 hours endurance race title in 2018. That means it is using a reworked EJ25 2.5-liter turbocharged Boxer engine and a 6-speed manual transmission for a powertrain that churns out 341 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque.
The invisible tweaks are accompanied by visual enhancements that also work to make the S209 the monster of a car it is. The vehicle is 1.7 inches wider than a standard WRX STI (72.4 inches total) thanks to the implementation of wider fenders, front canards and rear wing.
Flexible strut tower bar and draw stiffeners were fitted on the chassis and the power of the engine is transferred to the road via 19 x 9-inch forged BBS wheels wrapped in purpose-made Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600A tires.
For the entire 209 units run of the car, Subaru will be offering the car in two color combinations, namely WR Blue Pearl for the body and matte gray wheels, and Crystal White Pearl body on matte gold wheels.
Full details on the America-only S209 can be found in the document attached below. Deliveries are expected to begin by the end of the year.
