Introduced in 2001 as the equivalent to the Volkswagen Passat, the Skoda Superb entered is one of the Czech automaker’s best-selling models. The third generation is in production since 2015, and since then, Skoda manufactured more than 500,000 examples of the breed. 2020 will see the introduction of the mid-cycle update, and Skoda is much obliged to announce that full-LED Matrix headlights are coming to the flagship sedan.
Also available as a station wagon, the Superb will be refreshed at the 2019 edition of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Skoda is the main sponsor of the event, and the championship is hosted in Bratislava, Slovakia. Coincidence or not, that’s where the Volkswagen Group operates a factory.
Turning our attention back to full-LED Matrix headlights, the technology dates back to the previous generation of the Audi A8. The fog lamps have been redesigned as well, and as expected, the taillights now feature sequential turn signals. At the rear, the automaker’s logo has been replaced by S K O D A in bold letters, a similar design to the Kodiaq GT.
More chrome than ever before and the latest infotainment systems from the Volkswagen Group are also coming to the Superb on May 23rd. Even though there is no word on powertrains for the time being, the “Superb PHEV” will be the automaker’s “first plug-in hybrid.”
The combination of electric motor and internal combustion in this segment has been introduced by the Volkswagen Group with the Passat. In other words, don’t expect something else than the Passat GTE with different proportions and a different badge. Further still, the year 2020 will see the introduction of the Vision E-based EV on the MEB architecture of the ID.3 electric hatchback.
Being related to the Passat, there’s no denying the facelifted Superb will gain the 1.5 TSI with 150 PS and 250 Nm as the entry-level engine. A 2.0 TDI with mild-hybrid assistance could also be offered. On that note, you can get an idea about the design of the European model by checking out the Chinese version of the 2020 Skoda Superb.
